Across Her Body (2018)

Each July 31st, Mrs. Irene and the other fifteen women known as "fifteeners" return to the abandoned Monastery of the Accession on the island of Therasia, a lesser-known sister island to Santorini. For fifteen days, they reside in the monastery's empty cells, preparing it for the Accession celebration and praying for the peace of those they've lost. They reminisce about the tradition of the "Fifteen" while watching the tourists across Santorini's bay. The film explores themes of faith, identity, and gender by connecting three different concepts of the female body: the Virgin Mary, the landscape of Therasia, and the aging bodies of the fifteeners themselves. It's a tribute to a traditional image of Greek motherhood that was once common but is now fading in modern Greece.
