A disgraced writer and a stranded professor, outsiders in her small Midwestern town, subtly influence her sheltered existence. A kind waitress introduces her to new experiences like music and a new beverage. She begins to experience romantic interest from a boy. A devastating tragedy shatters Melinda's innocence.
