Description:

Amá is a documentary film that reveals a significant and largely unknown history: the abuses inflicted upon Native American women by the U.S. Government during the 1960s and 70s. These women were forcibly removed from their families and sent to boarding schools, relocated from their ancestral lands, and subjected to involuntary sterilization. After nine years of careful and respectful work, filmmaker Lorna Tucker presents the stories of many Native Americans, including three women – Jean Whitehorse, Yvonne Swan, and Charon Aseytoyer – who share their experiences. The film also includes a rare interview with Dr. Reimart Ravenholt, whose ideas about population control shaped some of the government policies targeting Native American women.
