Description:

A young Japanese actress reflects on her childhood during the war in Korea. Her father leaves to fight, her baby sister Miko dies of typhoid, and her close Korean maid Ohana is dismissed due to a misunderstanding that could have been fatal. Gradually, Chiko understands that Japan controls Korea and Koreans face persecution. After the war, Koreans seek to overthrow Japanese rule, and Chiko's family becomes unwelcome. The arrival of the Russians marks a turning point. To avoid suspicion, they must destroy all photographs – even of Miko. As the Russians arrive at their home, they decide to flee across the 38th Parallel in search of freedom. A group of people journeys through the mountains, guided by the North Star. They encounter a Korean man who, despite his family's suffering under Japanese rule, offers to help them escape the Russian soldiers.
