Description:
Conflict erupts in the Caucasus. Maria, 75, loses her son in the fighting. She and her daughter-in-law Sofia have lived in the region for a decade. Facing famine, they plan to relocate to Russia, deciding Moscow is their destination. Maria takes her dog, while Sofia carries a small suitcase, and they board a train. In the next car sits Alexander, a photojournalist, and Sofia and Alexander are in love. At a station near Volgograd, Maria realizes she can't leave the Caucasus. She writes a letter to Sofia and exits the train with her dog.
