Description:
Liberia, haunted by its history, stands in contrast to America, which has no recollection of it. The summer of 2003 in Liberia descends into chaos as a rebel army tries to seize power from a government led by a war criminal facing trial. The final battle of a decade-long civil war erupts between two armies, resulting in hundreds of civilian deaths from distant mortar fire and widespread hunger among thousands. Soldiers, many still teenagers, maintain a siege on the capital city. The nation hopes America, the world's dominant power, will end the violence. Founded in the early 1800s with a constitution drafted at Harvard by founders who freed returning slaves, Liberia is uniquely "Made in America." By 2000, once considered a leading nation in Africa, it now ranks last globally for quality of life.
