Description:
On February 19, 1982, a massive and demanding television taping occurred at New York's Radio City Music Hall. The event, promoted as "The Night of 100 Stars," actually featured approximately 230 celebrities. The 5,800 audience members were largely unaware they were attending a TV production, enduring lengthy delays for set and costume changes and technical adjustments. The taping, which sold out seats between $25 and $1,000, cost roughly $4 million to produce and was projected to raise about $2 million for an Actors' Fund retirement home. ABC reportedly paid over $5 million for the television broadcast rights.
