Bariera (1972)

In 1942, Nea' Vitu faces difficulties with his children: his son is drawn to the world of war profiteering, and his daughter is involved with a speculator named Treispemii. On the eve of her engagement, Vitu is accused by his son of concealing an illegal printing press in a painter's house. Thirty years later, he returns to the slum to find his family, but they are gone, and the neighborhood has changed. He investigates their fate. Nea Vițu raised his daughter, Rădița, and son Fănică, after his wife Dorina died in childbirth. Family struggles seem insurmountable for him; he is an honest man who clashes with his son Fănică. Fănică is even ostracized by the slum priest for attempting to create a new bible where he would be seen as God. Rădița is involved with Treispemii. In 1942, Vitu joined the fight against the Nazis and operated an illegal printing house with a painter.
