Marie works as a social worker in a neighborhood with a large immigrant population. Beyond her job, she runs a youth center, teaches classes, and acts as a parole officer for Belem, a young man recently released from prison. Marie also cares for Belem's son, Ray, while Ray's mother is working. Belem's release is timed with the arrival of an inquisitive economist from social services, interested in Marie’s effective but expensive work. As the pressure increases, Marie's emotions become more apparent, leading to scrutiny of her methods and intentions.
