The Acorns and the Wildcat (1988)

"The Acorns and the Wildcat" is a short film presented in a picture-book style, from the creator of "Night on the Galactic Railroad" and "Gauche the Cellist." Unlike typical anime, a narrator reads Kenji's story while warm, evocative illustrations, subtly animated, depict the events. The animation by Yasuhiro Nagura, who worked on Mamoru Oshii's "Angel's Egg," has a familiar quality, and Kenji's wildcat is rumored to have inspired Miyazaki's Totoro. Presenting the story through narration rather than dramatic action is refreshing, and Kenji’s magical language keeps viewers engaged.
