In 1964, Barbara Rubin, an 18-year-old teenager, stunned audiences with her 29-minute experimental film, "Christmas on Earth." The film's unconventional scenes and techniques signaled a bold new direction in New York City's underground film scene. A prominent figure in the 1960s counterculture, Rubin connected influential artists like Andy Warhol, Bob Dylan, and Allen Ginsberg. Driven by a desire to create in a field largely closed to women, she also explored Orthodox Judaism. Her life was cut short at 35, but her extensive letters offer a wealth of material. Filmmaker Chuck Smith uses these letters to create a portrait of this largely forgotten avant-garde artist and her significant contribution to film history.
