Valya always dreamed of living in Venice, so she sold her Moscow apartment and moved there. Her younger sister, Nadezhda, remained at their country house alone. After a few years, Valya grew disillusioned with Venice and returned. Now, the sisters live together in a house with a mezzanine, experiencing a quiet kind of loneliness. They are caught between what they left behind and what they are now. Life outside their gates feels strange and overwhelming, like a difficult journey each time they face it. Then Alexey appears – a thoughtful man. Both sisters are drawn to him, but they each have very different ideas about what to do with him.
