Black Atlantic: On the Orixas Route (1997)

Atlantic voyages brought enslaved Africans to Brazil, their bodies chained but their connection to Africa unbroken. This Brazilian film explores both continents, illustrating how spiritual practices, dance, and music thrived among the captives in their new home. Traditions from the Yoruba and Jeje people of Benin, including language and deities, were central. When a group of freed slaves returned to Africa seeking their heritage, they were met with unfamiliarity. They established themselves as skilled tradespeople – tailors, accountants, builders – and inadvertently introduced Portuguese culture to the continent. Now, when Brazilians visit Africa, they share the cultural traditions these descendants have preserved. The film highlights the complex ironies of the African diaspora.
