Description:
Can machines create music? Does a dot matrix printer differ from a record turntable? Optical Sound, Taanila’s 2005 film based on [The User]’s experimental sound work using old printers, shows these devices mechanically linked in a repetitive, almost musical sequence, with inkjets repeatedly marking the same spot. The film explores not the merging of humans and machines, but the fading boundaries between their traditional roles. We become lost in our data, which exists both everywhere and nowhere simultaneously. (Ken Hollings)
