Description:
In 1897, Queen Victoria caused controversy among her family and court due to her close relationship with Abdul Karim, an Indian servant who began as a waiter. The ambitious young man gained the Queen's favor by appealing to her fondness for Indian culture and her romantic perception of India, teaching her Hindustani and earning her affectionate letters signed "Mother," along with houses and gifts for himself and his family. Already troubled by the presence of a Muslim in such a central position, the Royal family intervened when Victoria expressed a desire to knight him, threatening to have her declared mentally unstable if she persisted. They succeeded. Following the Queen's death in 1901, Karim was removed from Royal circles and returned to India, where he later died.
