Description:
Prosecutor Maillard celebrates securing a murder conviction, his third at the current trial. He shares the celebration with his wife and friends, including Prosecutor Bertolier, whose wife is Maillard's mistress. While alone, the condemned man, Valorin, unexpectedly enters their room, having escaped transport to the detention center. Valorin immediately recognizes Bertolier's wife – they were together at a brothel during the time of the crime. Shocked by the error, Maillard attempts to rehabilitate Valorin while preventing a scandal. He enlists Bertolier's help, and Valorin is killed in an "accident," restoring appearances.
