Description:
"The Polygon" explores the village of Sarzhal in East Kazakhstan, located just 18 kilometers from the former Semipalatinsk Test Site, where over 600 nuclear tests occurred. From 1949 to 1991, the Soviet Union detonated 116 above-ground bombs, the radioactive clouds of which were witnessed by thousands of unaware villagers. They watched the explosions without realizing the deadly fallout contaminating their land, families, and homes. Two decades after the site's closure, residents continue to suffer high rates of cancer, related illnesses, and mental health issues. "The Polygon" journeys from the Cold War experiments to the lives of these enduring victims, even as Kazakhstan has become a prominent global economy.
