Description:
In 1938, Dmitri Shostakovich inspires his student, Lev Fleischmann, to compose an opera based on Chekhov’s story, "Rothschild's Violin." Tragically, Fleischmann is killed during the siege of Leningrad. Shostakovich finishes the musical arrangement, but in 1948 he is warned to hide the opera due to Stalin's crackdown on artists labeled as "rootless cosmopolitans." This period also sees an increasing presence of Jewish themes in Shostakovich’s own compositions.
