Description:
Levko, a simple Ukrainian worker, unexpectedly inherits his uncle's successful mill. This sudden wealth awakens a powerful desire for money within him. He begins by seizing the tavern of Yankel the Jew, who had been lured to his doom by the devil Khapun's promise of riches. Quickly, Levko transforms into a ruthless village usurer, exploiting the poor with unfair loans and diluted alcohol. His relentless pursuit of wealth destroys his compassion, alienates his friends and family, and ultimately leaves him isolated. The story explores whether genuine human connection can overcome greed, or if avarice will ultimately consume him.
