Silence… Broken (1993)

Silence...Broken is an experimental short film about an African American lesbian's fight against racism, sexism, and homophobia. The film features poetry by Jourdan Keith and is dedicated to Audre Lorde, a Black Lesbian Feminist Warrior Mother Poet who died in 1992 after battling breast cancer for fourteen years. The filmmaker created this short film to depict the internal and external struggles faced by Black lesbians who constantly navigate the conflict between their race, gender, and sexuality in a society marked by racism, sexism, and homophobia. Silence...Broken is inspired by Marlon Riggs' film Tongues Untied, which explored the experiences of Black gay men.
