FLY BY NIGHT centers on artist Duke Riley, who undertakes his most ambitious project yet: training thousands of pigeons with small LEDs to create swirling, gliding displays over the East River at twilight from a former naval ship in Brooklyn. Commissioned by Creative Time, the visually stunning project garnered praise from art critics and captivated the thousands of New Yorkers who saw the performances in spring 2016. The Village Voice honored Riley with a lifetime achievement award for "raising the profile of pigeons in public life." The film documents Riley's journey from initial idea to the final show, exploring the connection between urban life and the natural world, much like the project itself.
