perhaps/We (2003)

Solomon Nagler's perhaps/We presents a dreamlike vision of Warsaw, blending treated footage with possible archival material. The film cycles through images of an elderly woman sleeping and a neglected Jewish Cemetery, all bathed in a perpetual twilight. A soundtrack of found sounds and scratched records echoes the film's manipulated visuals. A lone voice narrates: "I float/ Above the world/ In my sleep/ In my dreams / And every time I dream, I loose half my body." A meditation on loss and fading memories, perhaps/We portrays humanity haunted by the ghosts of the Holocaust – figures that are mournful, yet dignified and restrained.
