Description:
The film follows two storylines. First, shepherds, driven from their homes by the Habsburgs, struggle with new problems under the control of the Phanariot authorities. Simultaneously, a village is abandoned as people leave to seek fortune. Pastor Nicolae Branga, tempted by the Viennese, betrays his community by becoming mayor and quickly amassing wealth by serving powerful figures on both sides of the border. The emperors, needing wool and meat, devise a scheme. They offer Branga a title – "nemes" – to corrupt him and use false documents to trick the villagers into returning home, then declare them serfs, seizing their property.
