Description:
The film opens with the funeral of Baron von Rosensteen. With no direct heirs, his ancestral castle is slated to pass to the Rabenfeldt family. A Supreme Court Attorney visits the baroness, Rosensteen's widow, regarding a document discovered among his belongings. It reveals the baron had a child born outside of marriage to a woman of lower social standing. The baroness and the attorney decide to locate the child, as she represents a potential heir to the castle. They discover the child is a girl named Anne Tofte, working at a gas station with her uncle Lars Tofte and his colleague Hans Høy. Anne is persuaded to live with the baroness, though she is resistant to the change. The baroness attempts to mold Anne into a proper lady, a stark contrast to the practical, mechanic-like upbringing Anne received from her uncle.
