Sophia Pinsky appears to be an adult with her life together. However, after losing her girlfriend and grandfather on the same day, she returns home to live with her strict Russian grandmother, Marina. Marina is eager to regain control of Sophia's life and finds a suitable husband for her: Trevor, a boy Sophia has known since childhood. Their date is unsuccessful, but at an open mic night, Sophia unexpectedly discovers an audience for her unique humor. The situation escalates during a family Shabbat dinner when Sophia and Trevor attempt to embarrass Marina by pretending to be in love, unaware that Marina has her own announcement planned.
