Encore II (Radioactive) (2004)

Encore II (Radioactive) is a short film inspired by Octavia Butler's work and David Bowie's Starman. The film re-examines footage from Julien's True North, which tells the story of Matthew Henson, an African-American explorer who was a key member of Robert E. Peary's 1909 Arctic expedition and possibly the first to reach the North Pole. In Encore II (Radioactive), Henson is reimagined as a cyborg, played by Vanessa Myrie. The film uses Super-8 footage from Julien’s 1980 experiments at St. Martin’s School of Art, manipulating the Icelandic landscape with electronic visuals and sounds to create a timeless, otherworldly atmosphere.
