Filmmaker Paul Cowan presents a poignant documentary about the 1992 Westray coal mine disaster in Nova Scotia, which claimed the lives of 26 men on May 9th. The film centers on three widows and three miners who survived the explosion caused by methane and coal dust. Their lives were irrevocably changed by the tragedy. It also features the stories of fellow workers who felt compelled to remain at the mine and wives who, despite rumors and witnessing workplace accidents, held onto hope. Ultimately, this is a film about working-class communities whose lives are often jeopardized by companies prioritizing profit over safety and basic human decency.
