Description:
For two decades, the Democratic Republic of Congo has suffered immense violence, with rape frequently employed as a weapon to shatter communities and control access to vital minerals. Often called "the worst place in the world for women," the Congo holds a different story. "City of Joy" centers on Jane, a student at a center where women recovering from horrific abuse find strength and become leaders. The film also introduces the center's founders: a dedicated Congolese doctor, a passionate Congolese activist, and a determined New York playwright. Interweaving moments of both joy and sorrow, the film follows these individuals as they unite to fight for hope in a region frequently considered without it.
