Description:

The screenplay's themes of loneliness, conformity, and the frustration of artistic expression drew heavy censorship from both the studio and Derzhkino. The authors faced extensive demands for revisions and additions over a year. The original title, "Na pokhony!" ("To bow down!"), was changed to "To Dream and to Live," reportedly due to censor pressure, according to the director's son. Censorship halted production 40 times, at various stages including script review, director approval, casting, and filming. The final film fragmented into disconnected scenes, despite strong technical execution. The director himself described the finished product as "a dead film."
