Description:
Nogreh, a young Afghan woman, lives with her father and sister-in-law, Leylomah, whose husband Akhtar has disappeared. Leylomah is primarily worried about feeding her baby, unable to produce milk due to her own hunger. Nogreh dreams of a life in a Western democracy. Though the Taliban are gone, traditional influences remain strong in Afghanistan. She subtly defies tradition, for example, by wearing Western-style shoes under her burqa. Mostly, she desires education and secretly attends a secular girls' school. Her ultimate ambition is to become President of Afghanistan. With the support of a Pakistani refugee who admires her, Nogreh seeks to understand the factors that drive elections in other countries, hoping to apply those same principles to her own political aspirations.
