Deacon Brodie (1997)

This drama tells the true story of William Brodie, a respected cabinet maker and town councilor in 1788 Scotland who secretly lived a double life as a criminal. While he publicly maintained a respectable facade, Brodie was a thief, stealing money but often returning it. His ambitious attempt to rob the city's Customs and Excise office goes wrong, leading to his capture. A highly publicized trial ensues, and Brodie is sentenced to death by hanging – on a gallows he himself designed.
