Popeye Sees 3-D (2014)

My studies with painter Hans Hofmann heightened my awareness of how we perceive depth, including unusual and unsettling ways of seeing flatness. In 1964, I discovered the Pulfrich Effect, unlocking illusionistic depths beyond normal perception. This inspired my partner Flo and me to explore the nervous system in 1975. We used two stop-motion film projectors, displaying shifting perspectives over extended periods, creating disorienting, multi-dimensional images. By 2000, we transitioned to digital technology, patenting our work and continuing our exploration. Eternalisms present stereo photographs, digitally combined to create a single, continuous dimensional image viewable without glasses – intriguing, yet unsettling.
