Description:
Marquis Sévéro, a wealthy and idle man in Paris, seeks a divorce to marry his goddaughter, Denise. However, Denise is in love with André Berval, an engineer working for the Marquis. Driven by jealousy, the Marquis sends André to the Caribbean to explore newly acquired land, promising him marriage to Denise if he succeeds. He then secretly instructs his manager in the Antilles to prevent André's return to France. The ruthless Alvarez develops a deep hatred for André after the engineer intervenes in Alvarez's assault on a local woman named Papitou. Papitou becomes devoted to André and defends him from Alvarez's plots, but she is heartbroken when she discovers André intends to marry Denise.
