Description:

Martinique, early 1930s. In a small village, young José and his grandmother struggle to survive. Most villagers work in sugarcane fields for meager wages, constantly threatened by fines from the overseer. The only path to a better life is through education. José excels in his studies, passing an exam that earns him a place in school in the capital. However, with only a partial scholarship, tuition is a significant burden. José and his grandmother relocate to Fort-de-France to make his studies more manageable.
