Description:
Palden Gyatso, a Buddhist monk from a young age, was arrested by the Chinese Communist Army in 1959. He endured 33 years of imprisonment for peacefully demonstrating and refusing to condemn his teacher as an Indian spy. During his time, he was tortured, starved, and forced into hard labor, witnessing the destruction of his homeland and culture, and the displacement or death of his loved ones under Chinese rule. *Fire Under the Snow* traces Palden's life from his birth in 1933 through the oppressive reality of the Chinese invasion. The film shifts between his past and present as an activist in exile, offering a perspective that reflects his haunting memories. It depicts the increasing brutality of his imprisonment, culminating in his escape from Tibet and a significant encounter with the Dalai Lama.
