Long Sorrow (2005)

Long Sorrow (2005), shot in a Berlin public housing estate, documents an artist's planned event. The artist, Sala, invited free jazz musician Jemeel Moondoc to play while suspended outside an empty apartment window on the 18th floor. For the Serpentine exhibition, Sala created 3-2-1 (2011), where saxophonists Andre Vida and Caroline Kraabel gave live responses to Long Sorrow in a series of daily performances. 3-2-1 starts with a saxophonist accompanying an audio recording of Moondoc's improvisation with his earlier performance on film, creating a combined "trio" of film, audio, and live music. The saxophonist then performed live with Long Sorrow, forming a "duet," before concluding with a solo after the film finished. 3-2-1 integrated improvisational elements into the fixed structure of the show, connecting the film and performance aspects central to Sala’s work.
