Description:
For over three decades, the Suharto regime has suppressed democracy in Indonesia. Wiji Thukul is a poet who openly criticizes the government, and his poems are frequently chanted by protestors. In 1996, following riots in Jakarta, he and other activists are wrongly blamed. Forced into hiding, Wiji flees to Pontianak, Borneo, where he lives under assumed identities for eight months, continuing to write under a pseudonym. Meanwhile, his wife Sipon and their two children in Solo, Java, live under constant watch. In May 1998, Wiji Thukul disappears, just a month before Suharto is overthrown.
