In Novel City, Thornton revisits her 1983 film Adynata, which examined ideas of the Other through what Thornton describes as an "Orientalist spectacle." This was meant to inspire critical reflection, a mix of fascination and revulsion that would spark cultural awareness. In her new work, Thornton explores China's current economic and cultural changes, depicting a chaotic capitalism. Filmed from her window in Shanghai's Jin Jiang Hotel – the location of Mao's 1972 meeting with Nixon – she layers images from Adynata to create a landscape of alienation and displacement.
