Description:
During the Vietnam War, filmmaker Sarah Maldoror used her camera to bring attention to the African wars of decolonization in Angola, Guinea Bissau, French Guinea, and Cape Verde. Her short film *Monangambée* depicts the torture inflicted by the Portuguese army on an Angolan resistance sympathizer. After editing, Maldoror approached the Art Ensemble of Chicago, offering them the opportunity to create the film's soundtrack. Impressed, the ensemble recorded the soundtrack for free as a sign of African-American solidarity. Filmed in Algiers, *Monangambée* explores themes of torture and the disconnect between colonizers and the colonized, drawing from a novel by Angolan writer Luandino Vieira, who was imprisoned by the Portuguese colonial authorities.
