Description:
Based on the life of painter Shōen Uemura, the first woman to receive the Order of Culture, this story draws from Tomiko Miyao's novel "Jo no mai." The title refers to Uemura's celebrated late-career painting of a beautiful woman. Tsuya Shimamura is born in Kyoto, the second daughter of a tea merchant who dies before her birth. Passionate about painting and unskilled in domestic duties, Tsuya attends art school and is given the name Shōsui, meaning "pine" and "green," by her teacher at age 15. Her work gains instant recognition when the crown prince of England buys one of her paintings. The novel follows the rest of her turbulent life, including her relationship with her teacher and the raising of her child as a single mother. Throughout it all, she remains dedicated to her art.
