In the fall of 1967, artists Ture Sjölander and Lars Weck teamed up with video engineer Bengt Modin to create an experimental program called Monument. Broadcast in January 1968, it has since been shown widely across Europe, Asia, and the United States. Beyond the technical innovation, the artists aimed to explore how visual images communicate. They used iconic images from world culture – portraits of famous people and paintings – as their source material.
