"The Geosophist’s Tears" (2002) was filmed during a seven-week road trip across the United States following September 11th. This ambitious work explores the symbolic meaning of the American landscape. Inspired by early geosophists who believed landscapes could be emotionally linked through instruments, the film uses visual algorithms to reveal unexpected patterns in the empty American countryside. The sounds were created using a rare, 1895 slide rule that hadn't been used in decades, producing music that is both sorrowful and ecstatic. Through fragmented and dreamlike depictions of horizons, the film presents metaphors for the nation’s condition and pays tribute to painting traditions.
