This documentary chronicles the creation of *Napoleon*, the 235-minute silent epic by French filmmaker Abel Gance. Nelly Kaplan, Gance’s assistant, assembled the film using archival footage from 1925-26, when Gance and his crew were also being filmed for a documentary called *Autour de Napoleon*. The documentary features surviving reels from *Autour de Napoleon*, as well as examples of Gance's innovative "triptychs"—three scenes displayed side-by-side on a wide screen. Footage includes Gance filming the renowned snowball fight at Brienne military school, alongside still photographs and excerpts from his production diaries.
