Fuku-chan was a hugely popular newspaper comic strip character in Japan. This film depicts a submarine attack on an enemy cargo ship, intended to inspire patriotism. However, Japanese children especially loved the scenes of the kitchen crew preparing meals in the submarine. Released in November of that year, Japan was facing a severe food shortage. The plentiful food supply in the submarine kitchen – including vegetables, fruit, fish, and rice, all luxuries at the time – was made into various dishes accompanied by cheerful songs.
