Simulacrum Tremendum (2016)

This sprawling film represents a lifetime of work for the filmmaker, who, though relatively young, has crafted something truly unique. While the length and the director's Filipino background might suggest similarities to Lav Diaz, the film is actually more experimental, leaning towards documentary surrealism. It shares a visual sensibility with Jonas Mekas, but with Manila as its setting instead of New York. The project began 22 years ago, documented using a variety of cameras – from VHS to mini-DV to iPhones – yet the footage isn't presented in chronological order.
