Description:
In Sarajevo during the 1992 siege, a ten-year-old boy witnesses the death of his parents when a grenade lands near their home, leaving him unable to speak. A kind neighbor takes him in. After their apartment is destroyed, he wanders the city with a schoolmate, prematurely confronting the harsh realities of life: violence, death, and the complexities of human relationships. The neighbor's attempts to shield him from the world prove futile. As the siege intensifies, and tragedy strikes her own family, she ultimately rejects him. The boy eventually escapes Sarajevo and, in a final act, fires a cannon at the city. Fifteen years later, at age twenty-five, he encounters his former caregiver. They find solace in their shared history of pain and suffering.
