Description:
Diederich Heßling is deeply afraid of people and the world around him. However, he learns that gaining power requires serving those in authority, adopting the philosophy of deference to the powerful and dominance over the weak. This strategy brings him success as a student in a duel-fighting fraternity and later as a businessman in a paper factory. He skillfully gains the favor of the influential district administrator, Von Wulkow, while undermining his competitors and forming alliances with social democrats. During his honeymoon with his wealthy wife, Guste, he seizes an opportunity to assist the Kaiser. When a Kaiser memorial is unveiled in his town, Diederich delivers the address, saluting the Kaiser in the rain as the crowd disperses and everything falls into chaos.
