Description:
Four recent university graduates in Shanghai are all out of work. Xu considers ending his life, but his friend Zhao persuades him not to. Zhao lives in a cramped room with a thin plank wall separating him from the next apartment. Miss Yang, who has come to Shanghai for a factory job, moves into the room behind him. Her nails through the wall knock down Zhao's photographs, and a silent conflict begins between the neighbors. Zhao lands a job as a proofreader at a newspaper and notices a pretty girl on the tram every day – unaware that it's Miss Yang. He's assigned to write about labor conditions for the paper and is sent to the factory where Miss Yang works.
