Description:
In 1995, RHI Entertainment produced a television movie of the Broadway musical *Bye Bye Birdie* for ABC. The film stars Jason Alexander of *Seinfeld* and Vanessa Williams of *Desperate Housewives*. The adaptation closely follows the original musical, with only a few songs added or rearranged and some dialogue adjusted to fit the changes. The story centers on a popular rock star who is preparing to enlist in the Army. His manager's secretary orchestrates a farewell kiss for him on *The Ed Sullivan Show*. The original musical *Bye Bye Birdie* won four Tony Awards in 1961, including Best Musical and Best Actor for its leading man, Dick Van Dyke. Tyne Daly, George Wendt, Chynna Phillips, and Mark Kudisch also appear in the ABC production alongside Alexander and Williams.
