Description:
In 1971, author and film scholar Donald Richie wrote a poetic travelogue exploring Japan’s Inland Sea, documenting his quest for traditional living and his own personal growth. Two decades later, filmmaker Lucille Carra took a similar journey inspired by Richie's book, filming scenes of quiet beauty and encountering people preserving the customs Richie had noted. The film includes unexpected moments—a monk who loves Frank Sinatra, a leper colony, a makeshift temple—and combines Richie’s narration with a score by Toru Takemitsu. *The Inland Sea* is an insightful journey and a thoughtful reflection on the experience of being a stranger in a foreign land.
